MLTA Fifth Annual Lobby Day
February 8, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Maryland Inn| 16 Church Circle| Annapolis, MD 21401
Lunch will be served at about 12 pm.
What is Lobby Day?
MLTA Lobby Day gives our members an effective way to let members of the General Assembly know MLTA’s positions through personal meetings, ideally with constituents. We will identify Participants’ Senators and Delegates, and try to set up a 10-15 minute appointment to discuss relevant issues with those representatives. Meet on February 8, 2018, at 8 am, at the Maryland Inn; 16 Church Circle; Annapolis, MD 21401. Lunch will be served at about 12 pm.
Why Should You Participate?
Lobbying provides elected and appointed officials with the information they need to make the best decisions for their constituencies. The information and education you can provide may be critical to the decisions that legislators make on issues that concern the title industry. Legislators respond to constituents and to personal contacts.
The 2017 Session of the General Assembly opened January 11, 2016. While we did not anticipate a particularly active session for the MLTA, we opposed SB 76, an effort to rename the Land Records Improvement Fund to the State Judiciary Technology Fund, and we were in favor of a bill that would do away with the requirement for an attorney certificate of preparation on deeds of trust. Plus, one never knows what may occur in any session, and we want to be prepared to deal in an effective manner with any issues that arise. A possibility would be anything that may arise out of the Select Portfolio case (Select Portfolio Servicing, Inc. v. Saddlebrook West Utility, LLC, et al., (Court of Special Appeals of Maryland, No. 1911, September Term, 2013), August 31, 2016), which will be argued in the Court of Appeals on March 6, 2017. We want the members of the General Assembly to know MLTA and what we stand for. The way to do that is to introduce ourselves.
What do I need to do?
Sign up! It’s never too early. Please complete the registration and submit it to MLTA@mdlta.com. We will have talking points prepared for all participants, and will provide some tips on approaching legislators. We will meet in Annapolis in the morning. We provide lunch for all participants who desire to stay to debrief after the meetings with legislators.
