2018 Lobby Day
Lobby Day
What is Lobby Day?
MLTA Lobby Day gives our members an effective way to let members of the General Assembly know MLTA’s positions through personal meetings, ideally with constituents. Lobby Day is a premier event that unites MLTA members with Maryland lawmakers to advance policies that affect Maryland property rights. MLTA Lobby Day discusses public policies regarding important topics such as title insurance, disclosure, mortgages, and taxes. We will identify Participants’ Senators and Delegates, and try to set up a 10-15 minute appointment to discuss relevant issues with those representatives. In 2020, we will meet on Wednesday, February 5, at 8:00 am, at the Historic Inns of Annapolis; 16 Church Circle; Annapolis, MD 21401.

Why Should You Participate?
Lobbying provides elected and appointed officials with the information they need to make the best decisions for their constituencies. The information and education you can provide may be critical to the decisions that legislators make on issues that concern the title industry. Legislators respond to constituents and to personal contacts.
Why now?
In 2019, we supported SB 678, the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts which will bring uniformity to the notary laws in Maryland and addresses electonic notarizations in the state. In 2017, we opposed SB 76, an effort to rename the Land Records Improvement Fund to the State Judiciary Technology Fund, and we were in favor of a bill that would do away with the requirement for an attorney certificate of preparation on deeds of trust. Plus, one never knows what may occur in any session, and we want to be prepared to deal in an effective manner with any issues that arise. We want the members of the General Assembly to know who MLTA is and what we stand for, and the way to do that is to introduce ourselves. Going forward, in 2020, it is incumbent upon our industry to keep our faces in front of decision-makers.
What do I need to do?
Sign up! It’s never too early. We will have talking points prepared for all participants and will provide some tips on approaching legislators. We will meet in Annapolis in the morning. We provide lunch for all participants who desire to stay to debrief after the meetings with legislators.
