This position is designed for an experienced professional who consistently delivers clean, closing-ready files, confidently handles complex or time-sensitive transactions, and proactively resolves issues without reliance on escalation.Serving as both an individual contributor and a team resource, the Senior Pre-Processor plays a critical role in elevating overall team performance by providing guidance, sharing best practices, and supporting less experienced processors. The role requires deep expertise in Maryland title requirements, strong judgment in reviewing legal and financial documentation, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.In addition to file management, the Senior Pre-Processor is responsible for maintaining compliance with all regulatory and underwriting standards, ensuring clear and proactive communication with clients and partners, and contributing to a seamless, professional closing experience. Success in this role is defined by consistent file quality, reduced post-closing corrections, strong client interactions, and a solutions-oriented approach to operational challenges.The position also requires adaptability and a forward-thinking mindset, with an emphasis on leveraging evolving technologies and systems (including Qualia and AI-driven tools) to enhance efficiency, scalability, and client service.

COMPENSATION: $35.00 - $37.50 per hour.

First American is seeking an experienced underwriting counsel to underwrite in the State of Maryland and District of Columbia. The underwriting counsel will provide underwriting support and expertise to company personnel, agents, and customer(s), related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies. They will utilize underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits, to underwrite the issuance of title insurance and provide guidance in the performance of real estate settlement services.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel, agents, and customer(s), related to the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies.
  • Utilizes underwriting standards and guidelines within delegated authority limits to underwrite the issuance of title insurance.
  • Provides guidance to company personnel in the performance of real estate settlement services.
  • Issues underwriting standards and guidelines in accordance with established company processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Law Degree and active license to practice law required.
  • Admitted to practice in state of employment.
  • 5-7 years title underwriting experience.
  • Must be familiar with real estate law.
  • Strong understanding of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of real estate title and settlement process.
  • General knowledge of Federal and State regulations related to real estate title insurance and settlement services.
  • General understanding of underwriting real estate transactions for the issuance of title insurance policies.
  • Ability to collaborate and act decisively.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills, able to multi-task, prioritize, and follow up in a timely manner.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
